Hot work is any activity that generates flames, sparks or intense heat—welding, cutting, brazing or grinding. A hot work permit ensures the necessary safety measures are in place—fire watches, fire resistant blankets and fire extinguishers. The goal is to prevent accidental fires or explosions in areas where flammable materials are present.

Cold work is any task that doesn't produce heat, sparks or open flames. Examples are routine mechanical maintenance, equipment inspections or basic assembly tasks. A cold work permit ensures these risks are identified and controlled before work begins.
